Listen up freshman year me,

Many things, good and bad, happen in the next few years of your life. Those things affect the difficulty you have in school every year for the next few years. Next school year, you play on the boys JV soccer team. Even though you play in most of the games that season, you learn that your coach was going to start you in a game at the end of the season… a game that ,in the end, never happens because it gets rained out. These are the breaks.

There will be a class that piques your interest. As surprising as it may sound to you now, that class is Drawing and Painting. This class gives you a perfect distraction from the world. Eventually, you’ll end up wanting to be an art teacher. I know how unbelievable it sounds because right about now – if I’m not mistaken – you want to be a chef or own your own restaurant. That changes immediately after you walk into Ms. Driller’s classroom. Being able to release your creativity on to paper and cardboard will really help make school feel less frustrating to you.

Later that same school year, you’ll take part in track and field (as unbelievable as that may sound, as well.) At first, you’ll be nervous, and unsure about what events you want to do. Don’t worry – you eventually figure it all out. Track becomes extremely fun and exciting. One of the events you end up loving the most (and i know this because i was there) is shot put. No matter how many times you mess up, you keep your head up and have fun. So, look forward to that.

In the beginning of your junior year, you manage to make the varsity boys soccer team. Don’t be too proud, though –  during the season, you only play in one game. But, you’ll still manage to have a little bit of fun.

That same school year you’ll start this amazing program at BOCES called Electrical Construction. At first you’ll have no idea if you will fit in with the other students in your class. *Spoiler Alert: you not only love Electrical, but you fit in, too.

In your senior year, you’ll play varsity soccer again. The season will have a similar start to last year’s, but you’ll play in a bunch games toward the end of this one. It’ll be the last time you play soccer, so have fun.

I told you these things, not because I want you to know what happens in your future, but because I want you to understand the ups and downs of life. Enjoy them for what they’re worth.
