Senior Ryan Perrius discusses his all-time, top five favorite bands.

#1: Metallica

Metallica is my all-time, number-one heavy metal band I’ve listened to. The first song I ever head by them was “Master of Puppets.” Metallica was a band whose music shot through my body like a canon at point-blank range. The sound of the guitars made me ecstatic, and James Hetfield’s screaming vocals got my adrenaline pumping. I connected with this band, and I knew that this would be the band that would start my journey into music.

#2: Led Zeppelin

Coming in close at number two is Led Zeppelin. Music has been a part of my life since I was very young. My dad would play Zeppelin album after Zeppelin album, and being around them so much made them a part of my daily musical routine. My dad would pick up the guitar and start jamming along to “Stairway to Heaven,” or “The Song Remains the Same.” So, like my father, I took Led Zeppelin as a kind of mentor to my guitar playing. With Jimmy Page playing heavy rhythm parts and fast, smooth leads, I wanted to be just like him. To this day, I have Led Zeppelin to thank for my guitar playing.

#3: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is a big influence on me in the way I write songs and the way I play guitar. Tony Iommi wrote some of the best riffs in metal history, riffs that are known worldwide, like “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” and “War Pigs.” Those guitar riffs always make me wish I could write songs like that. I’d be famous. Also, Tony Iommi is a very bluesy guitar player, which I also love.

#4: The Who

My grandmother loved The Who. Every time we would visit her in South Carolina, she would always be listening to albums like “Tommy,” “Who’s Next?” and “Quadrophenia.” Now that my grandma has passed away, I find The Who to be a great way to remember her. She was always happy listening to her music, just like me, so The Who will always have a special place in my heart.

#5: The Beatles

The Beatles were one of my earliest influences. Now that I think of it, they were the band that got me into music. With songs like, “Eleanor Rigby,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Let It Be,” I saw The Beatles on a whole other level. I saw John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as gods. They were the greatest songwriters and musicians of their time. Without them, I never would have gotten into music the way that I’m into it now.
