As I look out over the ocean, an overwhelming feeling rushes through me. How selfish are we to think that the world revolves around us, the human race? We are but a number – a small number within the number of species, of living organisms, of planets, galaxies, and stars.

I am on my own. The beach I’m on, in Anchor Bay, California, is scattered with shells and pebbles. Rock mountains to my right act like barriers, the water crashing against them like thunder. It isn’t a terrible thing, living like this. The worst of it is getting looks and pity because people assume the worst of my story. The adventure in my life is almost maxed out. Nothing I do costs money, yet it’s all priceless. And that’s the best kind of adventure. I look back at everyone, struggling to find themselves; meanwhile, I’ve never lost myself. I am luckier than anyone with a mansion, a Ferrari, a winning Powerball ticket. The odds that I would be who I am are not one in a million; they’re one in 7.4 billion.

It’s fair to say that less than half of the population has a place to get away, other than a vacation spot, or maybe their rooms. At one point in time, I had a room. But blank walls don’t compare to the stunning earth, the peaceful forest, or the pristine beaches. Out there, people are “living their lives,” parachuting or partying. Out here, I am living my life, adventure after adventure, with pauses of pure serendipity.
